Transmission Line Ice Monitoring Terminal
I. Overview
In recent years, many regions have experienced abnormal weather changes. Climate conditions such as freezing rain and sharp temperature drops have led to ice accretion problems of varying degrees on transmission lines in many areas. Additionally, winter temperatures are inherently low, and once ice accretion forms, it is difficult to handle in a short time. Therefore, early detection of ice accretion is key. To address this issue, Telcom has developed the Transmission Line Ice Monitoring Terminal. This device calculates the average ice thickness on conductors in real time through data from tension sensors, enabling operation and maintenance personnel to detect ice accretion promptly in the background and resolve the problem as soon as ice starts to form. It is currently one of the widely used devices for ice accretion detection in power grids.
II. Working Principle
The Transmission Line Ice Monitoring Terminal is powered by a combination of solar panels and high-capacity batteries. Normally, the solar panels provide daily power for the device, and excess power is stored in the batteries. When sunlight is insufficient or at night, the device switches to battery power. The tension sensor at the front of the device can measure conductor load data, which is then processed by the background to calculate ice thickness. If the calculated ice thickness exceeds the warning threshold, an alarm is immediately sent to operation and maintenance personnel, who can promptly take de-icing measures such as ice melting to reduce economic losses caused by ice accretion.

IV. Postscript
Transmission line ice accretion is a seasonal natural disaster greatly affected by meteorological changes. Its formation mainly depends on temperature and humidity. Once ice accretion forms and is not detected in time, the excessive weight will affect the overall stability of the line, leading to problems such as broken line fittings, broken clamps, and tower torsion or collapse. The emergence of the Transmission Line Ice Monitoring Terminal has given power grid operation and maintenance personnel an advantage in dealing with ice accretion problems. The function of real-time monitoring and early warning of ice thickness enables operation and maintenance personnel to respond to ice accretion problems in a timely manner. By taking measures such as increasing current to raise temperature and melt ice, the ice accretion problem can be improved, avoiding serious consequences.
